Why Liverpool Will Improve On Last Season's Disappointment

Updated: Jan 28, 2024

The long-awaited return of the Premier League will commence tonight on Sky Sports, at 8:00 GMT. Reigning Champions, Manchester City, will face newly promoted Burnley at Turf Moor.

This article will explain why we think that Liverpool will improve drastically on their results last season.

The Merseyside club had a disappointing season last campaign, finishing 5th (outside of the Champions League spots) and failing to qualify for the quarter-finals of every cup competition that they played in (the FA Cup, the Carabao Cup, and the Champions League).

Whilst their fifth-place finish looks poor on paper, most of this was down to their poor start to the season. Jurgen Klopp's side hit great form towards the back end of the season, tallying the highest points for any team in the final nine games. This came at the same time as Trent Alexander-Arnold rediscovering his best form, managing eight goal contributions in his final ten games. Klopp implemented Alexander-Arnold in a new inverted role, in which the right-back almost became a midfielder. This new role allowed both Trent and the whole system to thrive; Liverpool hauled a huge points tally that almost brought them into the Champions League spots.

With the end of Liverpool's season proving their quality, surely Klopp can carry this form over to the 2023/24 campaign. In pre-season, the Reds have looked strong in attack. Darwin Nunez looks to have finally found his scoring boots, with four goals in five games. Diogo Jota also bagged four, and fellow attackers Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz have looked dangerous. This depth and quality in attack will certainly allow Liverpool to become a strong force once again.

Furthermore, they have upgraded in midfield with signings Alexis Mac Allister and Dominic Szoboszlai. Whilst Jurgen Klopp still requires a defensive midfielder, following Jordan Henderson and Fabinho's departures to Saudi Arabia, they look set to sign Southampton's Romeo Lavia before the end of the transfer window.

With the team rediscovering their form, and incomings bolstering their squad, Liverpool look like one of the favourites to finish in the top four. We believe that Liverpool will fall short in their task to beat Manchester City to the title. However, we have predicted them to finish in second - ahead of rivals such as Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea. It appears that the last season was merely a transitional period in which Liverpool adapted to various departures (such as Sadio Mane) and injuries.
